Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of...
We all know this line....it's from our Declaration of Independence, as written by Thomas Jefferson.
The entire quote is:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happyness".
Last weekend I watched a movie on TV starring Will Smith entitled "The Pursuit of Happyness". It was painful to watch...really painful to witness this one man's determination to make a better life for himself and his young son. His trials and tribulations were just agonizing...one of those stories where you wonder why bad things happen to good people! In one scene, he's holding his sleeping son, and tears are slowly streaming down his face - no drama, no hysterics - just sadness and frustration. And yet there was a steely determination to pursue what he decided was his happiness.
So notice that in my title, I left out the end of the phrase!
That's because I'd like you to consider what YOU are pursuing in your life right now?
Is it happiness? Is it wealth? Love? Success? Health? Peace? Security? What are you pursuing?
And notice Mr. Jefferson didn't say HAPPYNESS was an inalienable right - only the PURSUIT of happiness!
So once again I go to my trusted dictionary, and here's the definition I found:
Pursuit - the act of pursuing; an occupation, career, interest, etc. to which one devotes time and energy.
So of course I had to look up pursue:
Pursue - 1. to follow in order to overtake, capture or kill; chase 2. To proceed along, follow, or continue with (a specified course, action, plan, etc.) 3. To try to find, get, win, etc.; strive for; seek after (to pursue success)
If you're reading this, you are alive!

But then what?
When you finish reading this, what will you pursue?
I recommend you watch this movie...it's soooo worth it! For all of us busy, ambitious professionals who are busy pursuing something, it's great to step back for this message of hope...to actually experience that moment of happiness.
Please make a date with yourself for dinner and a movie...take a break from the pursuit!

COACHING REFLECTIONS
These questions are designed for greater self-awareness and understanding of yourself and your own pursuit of happiness. I'd love your feedback and any successes you might celebrate with me, on my blog...Go to Lillian's blog...
ü What are you pursuing in your life? Make a list - make it as long as you like.
ü Now go over the list and see whether you've included "ways of being". These are the qualities that make you a totally unique human being, and that we value, consciously or unconsciously, in ourselves and others. Are you cultivating, or pursuing, more patience? More compassion? More generosity? More creativity?
ü What actions are you taking in your pursuit? Are you making progress?
ü Who is in your network of support? Are you cultivating those relationships?
ü What do you need to change in yourself to make your pursuit more fruitful? Easier?
ü What do you need to let go of in order to make your pursuit more meaningful?
ü Review the list again, and see whether everything on your list of pursuits is worth the time, energy, emotion and commitment that it demands. If not, remove it, and rechannel that time, energy, emotion and commitment into the other, more important pursuits.

CELEBRATING THE GIFTS OF LIFE
 In each newsletter, I will share about the gifts I have received - the people, organizations, relationships that have contributed to my life - and celebrate them by sharing a little of the story with you. This is my way of being an example of what I think we all need more of: namely appreciation and acknowledgement for the good we contribute to our world, in big and small ways. Contact information for each is in the Resources section below.
Here are mine - what are yours?
Seascape Resort on Monterey Bay was the perfect location for me and seven other women friends to meet up for our annual escape and play date! Everything was simply perfect! The rooms were spacious, luxurious in a practical and comfy way, equipped well for our cooking-in night when we watched the Academy Awards (my first time!), and right on the ocean, too! We had a bonfire on the beach with S'mores to celebrate a birthday. The staff couldn't be more accommodating, they'll shuttle you down to the beach, over to the magnificent sports center, or the wonderful little shopping plaza. The on premises restaurant was really to die for! Food selection was great, and totally wonderful, while we watched the sunset. Good friends, good times, good food, beautiful setting. Great escape...try it!
We had our successful and fun trail ride at Fort McDowell Adventures located in Fountain Hills, but technically right on the Yavapai Indian Reservation, Their horses are happy and well taken care of, the trails go through areas where you can't see any signs of civilization, and the guides are friendly, attentive and careful. They have wonderful catering facilities there, and a long list of special events to enjoy. Explore!
The Trailride & Fundraiser benefitted the Black Stallion Literacy Foundation. Check this group out! I love supporting causes that multi-task! BSLF combines promoting reading with compassion for horses...they provide a simple but unique approach to motivate children to read by connecting children with a classic hardcover book and the magic of live horses. By motivating both students and teachers, the BSLF helps start children toward a successful life from the beginning. On April 7 - 9 they will be serving 1100 kids at Horselovers Park in North Phoenix...I'll be there! Join me!
Tosca Kerr is a dear friend and client - she has attended my workshops, and took some fabulous photos on the trail ride. Some are posted on my Facebook page - check them out! She does so many creative things, like hand sculpted jewelry and is now offering "Expressive Workshops in Poly Clay"beginning May 23rd. BOOKS WHICH INVITE REFLECTION
I've chosen two novels and two non-fiction books to share with you. All have them share the theme of pursuing your dreams, your passions, your solutions, your future....enjoy!
What Color is Your Parachute? A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters & Career Changers, by Richard N. Bolles. A classic! Never goes out of style, and may be a great resource for you to reflect on your future work situation if you're job hunting.
The Passion Test - The Effortless Path to Discovering Your Destiny, by Janet Bray Attwood and Chris Attwood. The authors tell some stories, share some interviews, but the best part of this book is The Passion Test! Easy to take, and it changes your perspective and moves you forward. I enjoyed it!
Book of a Thousand Days, by Shannon Hall. This is a book for total escape...it's an adult fable that is perfect, peaceful escapism, yet the story reveals deep feelings of frustration, feeling trapped, and ultimately courage and a surprise ending. Simple yet fulfilling.
The Goal - A Process of Ongoing Improvement, by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. This is another novel, but brings you into the very real world of business...the challenges, frustrations, personalities and constraints that happen in a U.S. factory. Easy to read, profound in its aftereffect.

CLOSING
Aren't we blessed to be alive, and have inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...or whatever!!! Sometimes I think we have too many choices, but then would I really want it to be any different? Would you?
I enjoy the pursuit of my happiness...and my life reflects some really wonderful pursuits. Does yours? I truly hope so. If not, let's talk...because I know deep in my heart that life is too precious to waste a moment of it, and that's why I do the work I do.
