Create a Lifestyle
 AND a Workstyle!

I just came from a lovely pot luck picnic for volunteers at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum...my partner John goes every Monday to play with cactus and other specimens of desert plants.  It's a marvelous place - even the ride there is spectacular!  It's about an hour east of the Phoenix Airport, and well worth the drive.

I met a lovely lady whose lifestyle simply intrigued me.  She and her husband have been retired for over 12 years and live an "RV life", as she described it.  They literally have no address - can you imagine!  But imagine this:  they live six months at a time in a place they love or want to explore, and they traverse the United States to visit family, and pick the loveliest places to volunteer.  They are now living on the premises of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and can only do so for two stints (two winter periods) and as of May 1 they're off to the Oregon coast to help restore and develop public lands there.

Open RoadThis couple plans their life according to some basic values...they follow their hearts...they travel light and lean...they make friends and learn every step of the way.

And that's what got me to thinking.  Why wait for retirement?  I'm living the life I love NOW....but so many people aren't!  And the excuse most people use is that they have to work...that they have responsibilities...that they have to answer to so many other people...that they have to....

But do you "have to..."?

Here's my challenge to you:  What if...?

What if you could design the lifestyle that you wanted to live NOW?

What if you could design the workstyle that you wanted to face every day NOW?

What if you could combine them into one?

What if you had no excuses...or reasons...NOT to be happy???

What if you were happy with your work and the people you work with and the environment you face at work every day?  What if you actively looked for ways to contribute to the organization's well-being and goals?  What if you looked at any issue from management's point of view...or the employee's point of view?

What if, when you came home, you were excited to share your successes and felt safe enough to share your challenges and disappointments?  What if you actually listened to the others in your family about their day...and planned on sharing experiences together to build memories that you all cherished?  What if you played together?  What if you worked on a project together?

What if you took care of your body, mind and spirit in ways that meant you could count on yourself to live well and plan a lifestyle for when you stop working (formerly called retirement) that was a collage of all your dreams for that time in your life?

I say we can do it!!!  We can live fully, responsibly and happily when we:

  • Design our life around knowing ourselves, and not the roles we play
  • Knowing and living by our values, and not those we inherited or unconsciously adopted
  • Give ourselves a dose of joy and pleasure on a regular basis, without guilt
  • Believe in something greater than we are, whether that's God, the Universe, nature or whatever!
  • Put a little adventure or curiosity into each day, whether it's travelling to a new place or asking a question of an expert
  • Listen, really actively listen, to another person, and imagine what it's like to be them
There's so many more!

So I ask you:  what ways do you make your workstyle and lifestyle overlap so that life is delicious for you and the people around you?  If you don't know, call me...we need to talk!

COACHING REFLECTIONSTree

These questions are designed for greater self-awareness and understanding of yourself and the lifestyle and workstyle you are living.
  • What are you "putting up with" in your life?  In your business?  What little thing can you do now  to improve the situation?
  • What adventure or indulgence are you looking forward to?  If you don't have one, pause and daydream - doesn't have to cost a lot of money!  Can be as simple as an ice cream cone with sprinkles!  The idea is to anticipate something, something that gets your juices flowing...and build that into a habit.  The trail ride might be a good choice.
  • What values do you live by?  Which of your values seems to take a back seat to other, more pressing issues?  What action can you take to revive that value in your life, so that you feel connected to what drives you?  (Is it volunteering, or making a donation, or giving someone a hug, or patting someone on the back?  Do it!)
  • When was the last time you felt connected to nature?  Actually feel the warmth of the sun on your face...gaze at the night stars....smell a flower...listen to rain or waves...and then just breathe in the experience.

CELEBRATING THE GIFTS OF LIFE
2 Boxes

In each newsletter, I will share about the gifts I have received - the people, organizations, relationships that have contributed to my life - and celebrate them by sharing a little of the story with you.  This is my way of being an example of what I think we all need more of: namely appreciation and acknowledgement for the good we contribute to our world, in big and small ways.  Contact information for each is in the Resources section below.

Here are mine - what are yours?

The Flood Family gets kudos once again:  they prove the point that you can  teach an old dog new tricks!  My riding has improved so much over the last year...friends who came to see me ride at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show see the difference!  We came home with two, yes, TWO, Top 10 ribbons (much coveted).  And at the cocktail party we had at the barn, Bill put some of the kids on Cassanova...all too cute and heartwarming for words!  Come and visit us in Queen Creek - and take some lessons!  You're never too old - trust me!

Miraval Resort is not only beautiful, it's heavenly!   I spent 5 days there in January for a MasterMind retreat I'm doing with Lisa Sasevich (more about Lisa and our work together next time).  Everything about the location, the architecture, the service and the cuisine is geared to pamper, soothe and indulge sensory delights.  There's artwork and sculpture everywhere...including the delectable and healthy meals.  So many activities to choose from, including ropes courses (I climbed a 30' telephone pole and almost got across the high-wire), and Equine Experience with Wyatt Webb, all kinds of marvelous spa treatments, and the best "Quiet Room" filled with big, cushy velour chaises looking out onto the Catalina Mountains.  Definitely worth it!

Boyce Thompson Arboretum is a collection of specimens from the deserts around the world.  The paths take you from one part of the world to another...my favorite is the Australian forest!  There's a wonderful hike that gets you up into the rocks, but it is totally manageable and relatively easy, and they have an eclectic program of special events that you really need to check out.

Jim Primeau of Primeau PC saved me!  He was instantly responsive, showed up on time, and had my computer up and running in short order.  He also cleaned it up, made sure all my back-ups were working. Not only polite, but really considerate, and then the next morning when I hit the start button, nothing happened.  Jim was there within the hour (just worked out that he could come to me  before another client) identified the Trojan Horse that galloped into my laptop (I love horses, but NOT that kind), and cleaned everything up...now my computer is faster, and I have peace of mind that I have someone who knows what he's doing.  He works throughout the East Valley...I highly recommend him.

BOOKS WHICH INVITE REFLECTION

I chose the following books because they each offer a way of seeing the world that will stretch your mind like Silly Putty (remember Silly Putty???)...you don't have to like them, but you may just learn something that you can apply to your life...that brings us back to asking, "What if...?"
